moose yaks: adri cakes
She's a dope designer, a pro with a pencil and an all 'round creative cat. She's Adri Cakes.
With artwork so sweet, it's only fitting she goes by that name.
Neon Moose goes 1 on 1 with her to get the 411...
Tell us about adri cakes the brand. Adri Cakes is my identity. I actually believe it was you who named me "Adri Cakes" and it suited me so much that it kind of just stuck to me forever! So... thanks, Beeski [aka Neon Moose]!
I am a shark wrestler by day and a designer by night. Or maybe it's the other way around... I forget. When I’m not shark wrestling, I design, doodle and shoot things. I do anything from logos to websites to illustration. I guess my main focus is on the music industry, especially hip hop. I really love music and working with like-minded creative individuals, ‘specially because of the free range I get to go crazy and do something completely creative. It's the most rewarding type of work for me.
Also, coming soon is makeup artistry, which I am so excited about! Watch out world because I plan to take over you one colour at a time!
Your art has such a distinct flavour/style – how would you describe it to a blind person? I feel like my style can vary depending on the specific project I am working on. I think this is very important - to be able to adapt to individual client's needs at all times.
I feel like my design and illustration work overlap in styles. My design work almost always has some illustrative elements to it, while my illustration work tends to be very graphic.
My illustration style is very friendly but with a touch of sadness or melancholy. It has a slight dark mood to it, while still being warm. It reflects my sensitive nature that I feel most creative people have. It's almost like a contradiction.
You’re such a creative cat – what’s your inspiration? Life in this world. Humanoids. Music. Food. Trees (and the colour green. Wink wink). My dreams. My world travels.
I am very fortunate to be living in one of the best cities in the world (NYC) and I feel inspired here every single day. Plus, I love to create.
What does creativity mean to you? Turning dreams and thoughts that only happen in my brain into a reality, while expressing myself through my own style, and using that small part of the brain that most people don't choose to use.
What are your tips for people who want to follow their dream, or follow their passion? Never give up! If someone tells you no, then use that as inspiration to try harder and harder and harder. Have passion and love what you do. If you truly love what you do, it will not seem like a chore ever. Most importantly, be happy.
Any fun projects you are working on? I am currently working on an album cover for a rap duo where I have to come up with a character based on the two different artists in the group. It's very different to what I normally do, so it's a wee bit fun!
Are there any artists, creative cats or famous people who you admire? So many! But some of my all time favourites are:
Tim Burton - everything he does blows my mind and represents all I wanna be when I grow up.
Joe Sorren - a wonderful artist whose work has so much feeling and emotion that it makes my heart flutter.
I am also very inspired by music, and at the moment I am loving listening to Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar and this guy my homie put me onto - Phora, while I get jiggy in the studio.
